Seven UCI faculty members named Hellman Fellows for 2022-23

Seven assistant professors at UCI will receive Hellman Fellowships, which are bestowed annually to support research by junior faculty. They join an elite group of 70 UCI Hellman Fellows since 2013, when the Hellman Fellows Fund established the program here.

Although minorities make up more than one-third of the U.S. population, they account for less than one-tenth of clinical trial participants. To correct this disparity, Bernadette Boden-Albala, founding dean of the planned School of Population & Public Health and director of UCI’s Program in Public Health, suggests focusing on screening, the conversion from eligible to enrolled, and retention.

Racism has been declared a national public health crisis by the American Public Health Association. Cheryl Wisseh, UCI health sciences assistant clinical professor of clinical pharmacy practice, is the co-lead author of a recent study offering a framework for educators – based on a social-ecological model borrowed from public health theory – that has been effectively utilized to influence behavior change that positively affects health outcomes.

Michelle Khine, UCI professor of biomedical engineering, in whose lab the devices were developed, said she was inspired to pursue the innovation after the birth of her son nine months ago. Complications required the newborn to be confined to the neonatal intensive care unit hooked up to an array of machines supplying oxygen and monitoring his breathing.
